Essex need 366 to win
Nottinghamshire was dismissed for 385. Essex will likely regret the last-wicket stand of 66 runs between Hutton (38) and Pennington (13 not out). Reaching 366 in 52 overs seems improbable, though Jordan Cox's performance could change the outlook.
Injury sends Kent's Keith Dudgeon back home to South Africa
Kent suffered a setback with the news that South African bowler Keith Dudgeon, who took 7-36 in Northamptonshire's second innings last week, has returned home. Dudgeon injured his knee during training, and scans led to the decision to end his season prematurely.
At Chester-le-Street, Raine and Potts struggled with the top order. Doggett's run-in was notable. Barnard and Smith appear to have slowed the scoring.
Marcus Harris was dismissed for 50, another victim of the on-loan Calvin Harrison. A catch was taken at short leg. Lancashire is now four down, still 21 runs behind. Bohannon needs solid company.
A hundred for Josh Bohannon
Bohannon scored a century in the last over before lunch. This is his fourth century against Northamptonshire, his first since last June, and a crucial innings for Lancashire.
